  2. Shubha Khandekar Oh no! These so called sanskruti rakshaks create mess in everything.Hats off this man for his dedication and efforts against all odds.We Indians often fail to offer gratitude. Any way…

  3. Shubha Khandekar I see a more grave problem. We neither respect nor protect our culture. But when an outsider wants to do it, suddenly we r all possesive and dig out some rotten ritual to prevent him. This is horrible.

  4. Swati Kelkar I think you are off the mark a bit. The priest of the Odisha temples didn't do anything unusual or unexpected. They were being true to their dharma, in whatever way they understood and practised it, for hundreds of years. Spink turned his adversities into advantages, that was his greatness. He also made all his knowledge available by publishing it. The real issue is, what have we done with the huge corpus of knowledge he has left behind for us? Don't the Indians have a right to access it? It is not being taught anywhere in India. Why? And ASI has not acknowledged it at Ajanta. The point is, if ASI is not doing any academic work, how is it authorised to judge academic work, especially work which is so highly acclaimed all over the world? These are the questions that we need to ask, and ask again and again.

  5. Chalo Shubha Khandekar as discussed, let's be the change we want to see. Start with writing stories for children, take the story to schools and colleges. Our education system is huge. Getting any changes takes for ever. Can we look at the possibilities of social media to educate the youth – start a blog, Instagram which is the language of the young. Make it enticing so they want more. You never know where this might lead you. You might just achieve your objective

  6. Sarayu Kamat I hope you remember that I have only two hands and 24 hours and can only do so much and no more! Let others stand up and be counted! But I'm happy with the kind of awareness slowly building up, surely things should get moving once this nasty virus is out of our lives.

Respect!

  10. Anupama Deshpande Ignored won't be the right word, but his research work initially was neglected by scholars/ so called scholars. Later on ( after many years) Profs Jamkhedkar, Dhavalikar, Deepak Kannal and few others recognised his work and understood his short chronology of Ajanta. They had long discussions and sensible arguments.Truly speaking no one could disprove his theory. He was able to answer all the queries of several scholars and students. One has to go through his research work thoroughly which is not so easy in the first go.Anyway, though I was in close association with him for more than 30 years, I was able to understand Ajanta to a certain extent.Secondly Pravesh- means initially he was interested in studying Orissan temples, but he was not allowed to enter Jagannath temple ( you know why? ). therefore he took over Ajanta as his research work for which he said that in one way it was good that they did not allow me to enter the temple of Jagannath and happy to work on Ajanta.

  11. Anupama Deshpande Glad you raised it. In Volume 2 footnote 545 Prof Spink has written about how he was banned from entering Caves 1, 2, 16 and 17. It is true that he originally wanted to research on the Lingaraj — not the Jagannath –temple of Odisha but was denied entry because he was a non-Hindu and was told that his entry would cause riots! This turned him away and brought him to Ajanta where he settled for the next 66 years and published 7 bulky volumes. All this is very well documented and well known to people who have followed his work, but due to the word count limitations it is not possible to include every such detail in an article. It is also true that scholars named by Dr Shreekant Jadhav eventually accepted Spink's Short Chronology, but the point is it that it is neither being taught to students nor has the ASI changed its signboards at Ajanta to reflect Spink's monumental research.
